Summer in Sun Valley

Another place of adventure mixed with sophistication is Sun Valley, Idaho, a beautiful mountain town!

This North Idaho area is the home of Earnest Hemingway, and the place where he rests. Although it’s known for its amazing skiing in the winter, the summers are full of warm days and beautiful nights. The area has festivals of all sorts from the beginning of the summer to the end of August.

Sun Valley Summer on the Ice is a series that runs from July to September, and gives one a chance to get up close and personal to Olympic ice-skating superstars.

The Arts & Crafts Festival is one of the best in the country, from August 11th through the 15th

There’s also lots of fabulous hiking and biking – over 400 miles of single track mountain biking trails! Views from Mount Baldy of the Ketchum Valley are absolutely breathtaking.

Many options for hiking and biking in Sun Valley.

The Summer Symphony Series is another amazing highlight from July 23rd to August 7th.

Catching some rays while listening to beautiful music.

There are tons of art galleries, and you have to make sure to check out the annual Wood River Studio Tour where artists open up their studios to the public. That’s August 19th and 20th.

See unique and original works of art from Idaho artists.

There are even outdoor art installations all over town, wherever you turn on the street corners…

To bring the summer season to a close, they have an old-fashioned Wagon Days Festival, where you can watch a 20 mule jerk line do maneuvers with some of the most finely preserved covered wagons ever made.

Newport, A Port in Rhode Island full of Mansions

This week, it’s all about Newport, Rhode Island!

A beautiful New England Port Town, Rhode Island is full of some of the most famous summer cottages from the gilded age of mansions. The Breakers, The Elms, The Marble House, Rosecliff, and Rough Point to name a few. You can tour any of the cottages you want to see – just check the schedule online at newportmansions.org.

The Breakers Mansion

One of the most beautiful things to do is to walk along the Ocean Drive and check out the Cliff Walk. It has some of the most amazing views! It’s 3 1/2 miles of cliffs and rocky beaches.

Take a heavenly stroll by the seaside.

Newport also has the International Tennis Hall of Fame! A must-see while you’re in Little Rhody!

You’ll really score with this historical tour.

Oddly enough, Newport also has the oldest synagogue in the United States, Touro Synagogue. Construction was started in 1658, and the building was complete in 1763. It’s a beautiful space with tours available.

A place of spirituality and history.

For a charming experience and fun shopping, you should walk along Thames Street. You’ll also find some great eats! It’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon with the family.

A perfect place for a summer stroll.

If you’re sailing around Newport, strolling on the Cliff Walk, or taking a tour of the summer cottages while you’re in Rhode Island, pack those fabulous cashmere sweaters for a brisk seaside stroll, or those lightweight linens and cottons for hotter summer days. If you happen to be in steamy Southern Florida, make sure you pull out those lightweight linens and cottons in pastel colors to stay cool in the summer heat. Most importantly, no matter where you are, it’s all about style.

The Land of Enchantment: Santa Fe New Mexico

This week it’s all about the Land of Enchantment, Santa Fe, New Mexico!

The first thing you want to do when you get to this beautiful city is to go to the Plaza. You can sign up for walking tours along the Historic Railroad District, and Canyon Road where there are dozens of galleries lining the streets.

Santa Fe Railroad District

My favorite gallery on Canyon Road is New Concepts Gallery. There are always fabulous new pieces from contemporary artists – stop by and see for yourself!

Gallery owner Ann Hosfeld and Bonnie

After that, you’ll want to take a ride up to the ski basin to Ten Thousand Waves. It’s a beautiful area with views of downtown Santa Fe. You can get a massage, and even relax in a hot tub in the middle of the forest. Just magical!

View from Ten Thousand Waves

In a town of beautiful adobe buildings, there’s the famous Santa Fe Farmer’s Market! It’s one of the largest farmer’s markets in the United States with over 150 vendors and hundreds of different agricultural products. Not to be missed!

Santa Fe Farmer’s Market

The art scene in Santa Fe is unbeatable in the summer months. Visit the International Folk Art Market, the largest in the world with 160 artists from 53 countries. There’s also the Santa Fe Indian Market, which takes place the third week of August in the downtown Plaza with over 1,000 of the best Native American artists.

One of my favorite galleries outside of Santa Fe in a little town called Glorieta is Gallery Zipp, in a 200-year-old farmhouse. A husband and wife team, Bunny Tobias and Charles Greeley, will share their art, along with a beautiful collection of other local artists.

When it comes to the music scene, the Santa Fe Opera is happening through August 26th. It’s their 61st season, with five different operas, in one of the most beautiful settings I’ve ever seen. Get your tickets online at santafeopera.org.

There’s also the Chamber Music Festival, from July 16th to August 21st. There are over 40 different concerts this season! Check the online schedule here.

Chamber Music Festival

A special favorite of mine is Doug Montgomery at Vanessie Santa Fe. It’s a little restaurant piano bar and Doug sings and plays. A wonderful way to spend an evening, and a delicious one too!

Doug adding to the atmosphere.

Whether you’re in the high desert this summer wearing those fringe leather jackets, cashmere sweaters and denim work shirts, or you’re in steamy Florida wearing those lightweight cottons and linens, remember that it’s all about style!

I’ve put together a special Santa Fe Collection this week, featuring lightweight sweaters for desert nights, light jackets for daytime, and delicious silicon scarves to add a pop of personality to any look.

I Left My Heart in San Francisco

If you left your heart in San Francisco, or you want to take that little cable car up to the stars, it’s time to go to San Francisco, and check out all the wonderful things happening there this summer. A great place for a holiday!

The best scene of the San Francisco skyline is a little secret. You can take a walk down to Fort Mason, where all the galleries are along the Bay, and take a foot path to the end of the Municipal Pier. You will flip when you see the skyline from that viewpoint!

To catch all the windsurfers, take a walk down to Crissy Park, and take the foot path all the way along to the Presidio and the Golden Gate Bridge. You can actually cross over the bridge to Sausalito. That’s an amazing place over in Marin County.

Sausolito – a great day trip for Bay Area explorers.

Always a treat to see the San Francisco Symphony in the summer do free concerts at Sterns Grove, Pier 27, and even the Shoreline Amphitheater. This summer they’ll be doing a series of concerts including the music of John Williams. Check their schedule online (HERE) for other listings.

Symphony in the park, Pier 27.

A treat for the entire family: The Exploratorium! It’s open through September 4th, featuring a show called “Wildcard,” an entire physical landscape built out of cardboard including a 50s style diner where you can have a cup of coffee and a snack. Sounds like fun!

Exploratorium in full swing.

Take in the city by the Bay’s art scene this summer. Over at the Legion of Honor there’s the Degas and Impressionism show. Over 40 pastels and paintings by Dega, Manet, and Toulouse-Lautrec. Over at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, for the very first time in the United States, a collection of Edvard Munch paintings from 1880 to 1940. It should be wonderful.

Legion of Honor, San Francisco.

San Francisco has the largest and most comprehensive world dance and music event of its type in the entire U.S, the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival. Twenty-four Bay Area groups will perform at the Memorial Opera House from July 8th through the 16th. Everything from Bollywood, Balinese, West African, Cuban, Japanese and more. It should be fascinating!

Dancers from all over the world, gathering in SF.

When you’re in SF, downtown by Union Square is so much fun. There’s shopping, great restaurants, and more. But something very unique is happening on July 15th. It’s the 54th Annual Cable Car Bell Ringing Contest takes place, and you don’t want to miss that.

Ringing in summertime.

So whether you’re watching the fog roll off the bay in San Francisco and looking at the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge with those beautiful cashmere sweaters and lightweight leather jackets, or down in steamy Florida wearing your lightweight cottons and linens, it’s all about style.
